CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: Is it true that Jim,Lee and Brian ones where throwing out Barry Manilow records out of an Arista office window? Take care,
JP
Jim answers: I climbed on the roof of Arista Records, nice neighborhood, on upper Brook Street, kind of barricaded myself up there and hurled Barry Manilow records into the street and smashed quite a few. Maybe a little reckless, there were cars and people down there too. The president of the label laughed, at first, and then threatened to kick us off the label. It was quite hilarious what you could get away with back then, when you were young, wasted and had a giant hit record. That one was me, all the way!
Q: Your picture of "The Killer and The Head Cat" is great and reminds me of the Million Dollar Quartet - Rich Hall made a great quote this summer in a BBC4 TV program "Dirty South" when he referred to that event:- "If you were a religious scholar that would be the equivalent of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed ............... and Carl Perkins in the same room." So here's the question - Excluding your various bandmates (to avoid arguments) who would you pick (living or past) as a quartet to perform your favourite songs?
Jim answers: It was funny, I played in Jerry's band for a while and thought I knew him. Lemmy wanted to met him. I took him into Jerry's dressing room. Jerry couldn't remember me for a million dollars! He did try and we got a good picture. For once Lem wasn't the gnarliest guy in the room.
I'd love to have played with Buddy Holly, Joe B Mauldin, Bill Black, Cliff Gallup, Eddie Cochran, John Lennon, Muddy Waters and of course, Elvis. I could go on and on. I have played with Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, George Harrison, Scotty Moore, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Ringo, Dave Edmunds, Lemmy, Johnny Ramone, Capt. Sensible, Glen Matlock, Glenn Tillbrook, Billy Duffy, Mikey boy Peters. I could go on, and best of all, Lee and Brian. Again, I've done pretty good. |

CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: hi slim jim my name is mical here is my question: what other career or job would you have done if you were not a musician?
Jim answers: I've only ever made a living by playing music, and worked one summer at John J Burns Park. Is painting goal posts and making crooked baselines out of chalk a career? I would've been happy to work in the drum dept at Manny's or Pro Percussion.
Q: When did you first attend a concert?
Jim answers: First concert was probably some time in high school. I couldn't really afford to go, shows were expensive. We were still pretty young too. Madison Square Garden, maybe. Went to the clubs. Saw the Ramones at CBGB or Max's. The first time I ever saw the Rolling Stones was when we opened up the show for them.
Q: what was the funnest gig for you that the stray cats did over the years?
Jim answers: A few fun shows. Real early ones on Long Island, when I knew immediately that we were destined to make a mark. We were good, right away. Dingwalls, Marquee, The Venue, London in the early days. The first time in Paris. The first time coming to LA was amazing. We did the Roxy three days in a row, two shows a day - afternoon matinee show and an evening show. Next time we came back to LA, we did the Palladium, three nights, sold out, met Britt Ekland - that was a fun one! The first time we played festivals was a gas. First time we played after the record was on the the radio was fun. The Rumble in Brixton show was quite extraordinary. |

CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: Dear slim Jim, Did stray cats really sell everything they owned to make it to england ?
jay
Jim answers: That one is true. We had a little PA and some amps and each of us had a car - all that was sold. We had also saved up some gig money, we were working the bars on Long Island - four sets a night, five nights a week. We kept the bass, the Gretsch and a snare and cymbal - all of which we carried around London.
Q: slim jim, how did you get the name slim jim phantom?
Briggitt Avalos
Jim answers: Again? OK, we were really into Gene Vincent and on the album liner notes everybody had a nick name - Gallopin' Cliff Gallup, Be-bop Harrell etc. We had Flyin' Brian and Slim Jim. Mine just happened to really stick. As far as Phantom, in London, at the time, everybody was Rotten, Vicious, Idol. I liked Phantom comics and maybe Fanta soda was involved. Again, mine stuck. Lucky me! Pretty good rock and roll name. Held up well.
Q: Remember the good times working at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa?
Tom Keenan
Jim answers: John J Burns was great. Best tan I ever had. I was probably in good shape too. A couple of young guys and I did all the work while the old guys leaned on shovels and bossed us around. Learned a bit about government corruption, got very good at handball for a little while and definitely practiced my drums a bit more, knowing I couldn't handle a life of real work! Positive memories from that summer.
Q: IS IT TRUE THAT YOU WERE THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY AT ST. ROSE LIMA ?
UNCLE CRANKY
Jim answers: I was forced to go to St William the Abbot in Seaford. Never went back once after my confirmation. I was dragged a few times to the folk mass at St Rose of Lima, by my aunts who lived nearer to that one. I do remember a big brutish boy, from north Massapequa, who used to steal from the collection plate. I wonder what ever happened to him? |

CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: Hi Jim. Do you collect Bootleg CD's from the Stray Cats? If so, what Boot do you like the best? Joe Finkle, Burbank, CA.
Jim answers: I don't particularly collect anything but I do have a few I've been given. I have mixed feelings; someone's out there making money off the fans for sub-quality sounding gigs - that does bug me. The band gets screwed out of any royalty. I appreciate the dedication but it's a funny thing. The band is amazing on every single one I've heard - always a great noise and energy - that I will say. I prefer old photos I've never seen - "I wonder what ever happened to that shirt" - that kinda stuff.
Q: Are there any '50's classic tracks that you have always wanted to cover but haven't got round to?
Steve Lees
Jim answers: I think between the Stray Cats and Head Cat, I've played them all. Lemmy drags out some amazing ones. Darrel Higham knows every single one of them, ever! There must be a few but, again, I've been lucky. Got most of them.
Q: Hi Jim, I've recently read about a recording that you and Lee were to make with Jeff Beck back in 1984-85. Did that recording ever happened? If so, what kind of music was recorded? Any intentions of "undusting" it? Thanks,
Jon
Jim answers: Lee and I did some recording with Jeff Beck. He was an early Stray Cats fan and came to a lot of shows on the first tour. We became pretty good pals and used to hang out in LA. We went to the studio for a week, one time, we did some Ricky Nelson covers. Jeff wanted to play those James Burton solos note for note. Once in a while he would bust out some amazing Jeff Beck solos while Lee and I kept it going in the back. Jeff would come back in the control room and say "it's too, Jeff Beck, erase it" and go back out and record another solo note for note to the original. I liked the crazy stuff on top of Lee and my rhythm. We were really just having fun, goofing around. I'm not sure if anyone ever sang on it. No idea where the tapes would be. The studio isn't there anymore. Another legendary session at the old record plant. I just ran into Jeff, like two days ago, small world. He's the best, a cool cat, mind blowing musician and a true rockabilly fan. |

CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: Have you ever recorded a Christmas song and if not would you?
Rockin Dev aged 8............Merry Christmas Jim
Jim answers: Dev check out Swing Cats' A Rock-A-Billy Christmas: www.slimjimphantom.com/MusicSwingCats.htm
Q: Our church nativity service this Sunday includes a short light hearted and blended version of Dickens' A Christmas Carol and The Nativity - I am playing the spirit of Jacob Marley - I am wondering whether the Phantom has ever appeared in any seasonal stage shows or films as a ghost or such like.
Jim answers: I was only in one stage production. I played a drug dealing drummer. Clint Eastwood was the director. In our neighborhood some crazy girl would steal all the baby Jesus' from people's nativity lawn scenes. Hopefully you don't have that problem!
Q: On ghost related matters, I have been working on the major restoration of a Tudor Hall in my home town of Salford. This is a ghost watching hot spot and the ghost webcams have recently been re-established - see this link http://services.salford.gov.uk/ghostcam/. Has the Phantom ever been spotted on a ghostcam?
Gary Booth Manchester UK
Jim answers: I don't believe in ghosts, yet.
Q: My question for Jim: Who did put the bomp in the bomp bomp bomp bomp bomp?
Banksy
Jim answers: I think Lemmy put the bomp in the bomp bomp bomp bomp bomp. |

CHRISTMAS Q&A
Q: hey jim, will there ever be a stray cats reunion thingy going on? i hope so!!
paul
Q: Will Jim, Brian & Lee come back over here and do the UK dates that they cancelled when Jim broke his arm? "Finish the tour", so to speak...? I know that it could be an expensive production to put on the road only for "a handful of gigs", but they could always add more dates... ;-)
Christmas greetings,
Anders Westhagen,
Elverum, Norway
Jim answers: I'll always love playing rockabilly music with the best guys. I'd love to come back and play some shows. I'd stay away from the front of the stage at Brixton. Somebody catch me next time! We'll see what happens.
Q: Jim: You are planning a European tour in 2011?:-)
Petra
Jim answers: 2011 could be a great year to tour Europe. |
